Dear Amazing You who can never seem to find enough time,
I have a quote for you:
“When we put God’s purposes first, He will give us miracles….Those apparent prison walls of ‘not enough time’ will begin to recede even as you are called to do more.” -President Henry B. Eyring
I set this quote as my lock screen wallpaper early this week because I needed this promise to come to pass. I know I say this every year, but this year I really mean it–it has been the swiftest summer of my life! I blinked and it’s August. Crunch-time is upon me with preparations for a new homeschool year plus tying up all the loose ends of summer and the continual hand-watering of all our trees. I move from one task to another without pause and by the end of the day have little to show for it.
But time is like an amusement park–because it’s relative. Have you ever been on a Ferris Wheel when they keep stopping at random intervals to let people off and let people on and it seems like with all the starting and stopping and waiting and swinging that you are suspended in mid-air for over an hour (even though it’s only been a few minutes)? If we’re sick or suffering or waiting, it’s like we’ve boarded a giant Ferris Wheel and can’t get off. Time nearly stands still. And yet, when you seat yourself on a fast-paced, highly-thrilling roller coaster, time zips by with all those loops and twists.
I’ve come to find that there are Ferris Wheel seasons and roller coaster seasons in each of our lives.
But the wonder of it all is that God can stretch out our time, or shorten it if necessary. Because He is a God of miracles. And according to President Eyring, all that is required of us in order to receive such a miracle is to place the Lord as our #1 priority.
It’s been a week of putting Him to the test. Not only have I tried to put Him first each morning, but I’ve prayed and pleaded that my prison walls of “not enough time” will indeed recede, just as was promised by an apostle of the Lord.
And the result?
Well, the check marks in my planner declare that despite the speed of the roller coaster, God did undoubtedly lengthen out my time so all my to-do’s could get done. And not only that, but He slowed the pace just enough to allow for some unplanned family time to savor at the close of each day. Time to watch a few short shows, to read extra stories, and time to eat Creamies on the quiet of our front porch.
But, you don’t have to take my word for it. You can try the experiment for yourself. Whether you’re boarding the Ferris Wheel or a roller coaster in this season, all that really matters is that you invite the Lord to ride with you.
For He makes your time on every ride ever so worthwhile.
